This has been discussed to some extent in the Quiz room, but I thought it might be good to bring it up here.
On the Prof's gravestone is inscribed 'Beren Erchamion' and on his wife's 'Luthien the Fair'. If you were to have one of these inscriptions on your barrow, what would it be?

For me:

TURIN TURAMBAR DAGNIR GLAURUNGA
Hero of Doriath and Brethil

Re: Tombstone Inscriptions...

Sorry Gwaihir, I might not have got it, why put another ones name on your tombstone? Surely you are not called Turin? Or are you?

Mine would be:

IMRAHIL GAMEGIE DE DONAREO
Defender of men

Or should it show something different?

Re: Tombstone Inscriptions...

A barrow does not have a tombstone; neither do ashes from an incinneration. I'd want one of these two because I would like to be remembered by others for my deeds and achievements, not a piece of carved stone.

Sharku, do you mean you would prefer not to have something written above where you would be buried? or what?

I want to be cremated, so I don't want a tombstone. I wouldn't know what they'd have to write on it. Also, I rather remember people in a place that suits the way they lived, than in a graveyard.

Re: Tombstone Inscriptions...

And what a bunch of unimaginative no-hopers you are -- saving gamegie's grace -- to not be able to come up with a simple inscription based upon your user name. I should have posted this somewhere else.

BTW thanks gamegie for bringing to my attention that I am Gwaihir, not Turin! So:

Gwaihir the Windlord
Lord of the Eagles of the Hithaeglir during the Third Age, rescuer of the Ringbearer and vital part of the Quest of Mount Doom.

Re: Tombstone Inscriptions...

Don't get upset Gwaihir........ Maybe they just don't want to have a stone above their grave. And a lack of imagination also.........?

After all I would also not like to be buried and I would like to have my ashes sprinkled out at sea from the Grey Havens Swan-like white boat.

I like what the Mongols do (did?). They placed their dead, unburied, in a wild, empty place that had the right kind of "feng shui" (that's the Chinese term; I don't know the Mongol word for it.) That would be alright for me.

I love exploring old cemetaries, (grew up by one), and reading the inscriptions. And I think Tolkien's gravestone is very touching.

But if I have a marker, I'll let my next of kin choose what they want on it. After all, it's there for their comfort. I'll be busy doing other things.

Eek, based on my own screen name? I'd much rather have it say something about some Tolkien-ite... there must be one that's appropriate for my personality! Perhaps:

I'd like something with simple dignity, such as When you're dead some simpering idiot will probably stand over you doing whatever you're about to do.

Actually Tolkien's gravestone doesn't even have 'Beren Erchamion' or 'Lúthien the Fair' in its inscription. It simply has their names and dates, with 'Luthien' (the mason has omitted the accent) beneath Edith Tolkien's name and 'Beren' under John Ronald's.

Well, after spending 10 minutes trying to come up with a suitable haiku for my tombstone, I've decided on the following:

Galadrie1
She wasn't a poet,
And boy did she know it.
Now she's dead and gone,
So we wish her "So long!"
(See, I told you she wasn't a poet)

Well, when I die I plan on being mummified, in a huge pyramid bigger than any so far. I won't, then, have a tombstone as such, but I'll have something written in letters only readable from the air. This will say, "So long, and thanks for all the fish," and "Day shall come again".
