By the way...
Either I'm too tired, or I'm missing it for the lack of good sight, though I looked through the thread twice - have the name given been named (apart from joking up there about combining davem and lalwende)?

Congratulations Lal and Davem! =) as we'd say in my family "que cosha golda!" ("cosa gorda" which is literally translated to "chubby thing" but that is NOT the meaning... it means rather a cute lil' one )

a new little baby such a heavenly sight he'll steal your heart by day and your sleep at night* CONGRATULATIONS!! I am so happy for you both (Wow, I thought my boy of 9lbs2oz was big!). He is so cute and smells good, too. Yes, I can smell through the computer. Just so excited for you both. It is an amazing feeling when a tiny little person has been on this earth not so very long but then you can't imagine them not being a part of your life. Quote:

A slightly belated congratulations to both of you, he is a cutie! Can't say how it pleases me to see the "dating-success" of the Downs resulting in a next generation (having been happily married to a downer for 3 years now, myself)

Something funny - I just met a one month old just barely the same weight as this newcomer when he was first born! Hope all is going well with you, Lal, and your recovery. My Mom had three Ceasarians. No fun. Blessings! -- Folwren

I'm back.
Well I have a thousand and one things to do and am verrry tired, but my first task shall be to come on here. We came home yesterday evening. Davem said he'd do the through the night thing last night and is now in a sate of severe shock - I'd already done four nights of this in the hospital so I was quite happy to give him a turn but the little tyke decided to give him the run around and not induct him in lightly. Meh. It's quite funny how quickly you fall into casual talk of sore bums and the colour of poop. Saying "What has it got in it's pocketses?" adds amusement to the task... I'm quite taken with the concept of modern medicine as the hospital team did a great job and despite still walking around at little old lady pace and whining when I climb the stairs as I can feel the stitches pulling, I was up and on my feet within 12 hours of the event. There's nothing to be scared of really, painkillers are excellent these days and then afterwards nature shows you what to do. Now I need to look up what Middle-earth events took place on his birthday - off the top of me head, I think this was when Frodo was fleeing to Rivendell wasn't it?

Apparently, Glorfindel left Rivendell on the 9th. That would be pretty close.

<- Here's a beer to wet the baby's head ...
Haven't been around much lately - family, work, other interests etc - so I have only just seen this.
Many congratulations to both - all three - of you. I am really happy for you. I remember when our first was born - nearly 10 years ago now - and what a wonderful moment it was. As for those who tell you to make the most of every moment, well they've got it just about right. The years just seem to whizz by. I am impressed that you sound so calm, Lal, after what you have been through. My recollection of the first few weeks is utter panic, although that was largely because Mrs S had some complications (severe back pain from a botched volley of epidurals), and I had to learn the basics of babycare pdq. Still, it sounds like you are coping well, and I'm glad that you have got davem doing his fair share. And bear in mind that things are always much easier second time round. All the best. ~Sauce~

Poor Mrs Sauce.... few phrases not concerning actual loss of life have filled me with more horror than those five words ...
Other interests? Don't tell me you have seen the light and have taken up watching rugby?

I was told right away that an epidural was the sensible choice as it was going to hurt more than normal otherwise so I took it gladly - I was scared but the brisk and sarcastic manner of the anaesthetist made me laugh and thankfully she did a good job. The other anaesthetist who took over in the evening was similar and let me hang onto her hand and talk mind-diverting drivel to her all through the op. I asked one if she had a thing about needles considering her specialism and the other I accused of being a sadist.
I'm calm because I have to be, but I have had some screaming fits over the inability to get the steriliser into the microwave and thinking I'd given the tyke nappy rash (it was his antibiotics which did this) And davem has taken to it all like a duck to water.

I know that I would not want to be even
vaguely conscious during major surgery and if the pain was going to be bad enough to make having a ruddy great needle shoved in my spine seem like a good option, I'd rather be knocked out and woken when it was all over .....

It's all frightening at the time, but afterwards you really do put it out of your mind, possibly as you are soooo tired... I did wonder what agonies poor Miriel went through having Feanor though, to make her react like that? Wonder how heavy he was?

Congratulations and best wishes to everyone involved (but particularly to the new mother who, let's face it, had the biggest and most important job).
Free Advice From a Parent: ignore all the advice you are about to get (except this of course). (Now the real question: when, several years from now, davem reads The Hobbit aloud to the child, will the tra-la-la-la-lalee singing Elves be left in the story or summarily excised as not belonging in the legendarium?)

Ahhh The Cuteness
He's soooooooooo cute!
Of course I don't know anything about birthing children, because I am not old enough yet to do so since I am only thirteen! Other than, when my little brother was born, a matter of six and a half years ago he was purple! I will say this again... he's soooooooooo cute!!!!! I say you should name him a sensible hobbit name, like ummm... not Ted Sandyman or Lotho Sackville-Baggins!!!!!

If you aint seen me blog lately...The big little guy is now weighing in at 13lb 11oz and is two foot tall, so almost Hobbit sized in height if not in girth. He's learnt to smile and giggle and is currently eating his fist while listening to The Pogues. He laughs at monkey noises and davem blowing raspberries and currently has his very first bout of 'man-flu'

I always think it is a conundrum, to describe a baby's size before he or she walks: is it really "tall" or would "long" be more appropriate?
He's got a beautiful smile. Isn't it worth all the world and loss of sleep to see that smile? especially when it comes just after an upchuck or the umpteenth nappy change five minutes after the previous one, which drenched the bed too.
