Lyra, you're really close.
They're not just associated with the jewel, they did something with it...and Galadriel's isn't Nenya...

They gave away a jewel? Bilbo gave the arkenstone to the wood-elves and men (although it was eventually returned and buried with Thorin), Beren gave the silmaril to Thingol in exchange for Luthien's hand, Arwen gave the white stone to Frodo, Galadriel gave the Elessar to Aragorn... I can't find Aldarion's though

yay! Sophia's got it.
Aldarion gave Erendis a jewel, a diamond to wear on her brow, before he married her.

Are they all the sort of fathers of a race: Durin was one of the seven fathers of the dwarves, Fangorn one of the threee chief ents, Glaurung was father of dragons, telperion was the elder of the trees of Valinor, Ingwe and Finwe were two of the first three leaders of the elves? Or are they known as the "oldest"?

Finwe was the first slain in Aman Ingwe was the first high king of the elves (his name also means 'first one') Glaurung was the first of the dragons Durin the first dwarf-father to awake Telperion was the first tree to flower Fangorn must have been the first of the ents if he was eldest... Here we go:
Gildor Frodo Galadriel Legolas Sam This is a bit hard maybe so I'll give you two clues. The answer is to be found within the text of Lord of the Rings. And there are others who also do this but they are not named specifically.

Okay, you'll have a hint.
In order to be able to know about Celembrimbor, you need to have read the Unfinished Tales. In order to know about Ted Sandyman in the movies you need to have seen the extended editions. So focus on Daeron, Maeglin and Gwindor if you're not sure you know the others. The list is not actually comprehensive or near to perfect. I could add Celegorm and Brandir on it, and I'd probably be still forgetting some people. So, what do Daeron Maeglin Ted Sandyman in the movies Gwindor Celebrimbor Celegorm Brandir have in common? Does this help at all?

They were all in love with someone who loved someone else.
![]() ![]() ![]() Otherwise, Daeron => Lúthien; Maeglin => Idril; Gwindor => Finduilas; Celebrimbor => Galadriel; Celegorm => Lúthien; Brandir => Nienor.

Well you're right in that they did all do that, but so did many others who are named...that's not what I had in mind.
But you're kind of lukewarm, I'd say.

No, that's not it, either.
It's something they all do if you look at the text of LotR. Something no other named character does.

Sophia, in fact you're right! The actual answer is that they all *call* to Elbereth.
(Both Aragorn and Bilbo mention her, but they don't call to her. The song calling to Elbereth is sung in Rivendell, and by Gildor's people, but the singer isn't named.) Well done, your go...

All of their fathers were killed, or in Turin's case, imprisoned while the he was still young. In other words, they were all fatherless.

There were (at least) two of all of them, except Eomer.
Aragorn I was a Chieftain of the North, Aragorn Elessar was King of Gondor/Arnor. Beren Erchamion was wedded to Luthien, Beren of Gondor was the steward who let Saruman have Isengard. Turin Turambar was tragic, Turins I&II were stewards in Gondor. Eomer was just Eomer Eadig, King of Rohan. Sophia AAAH DRAT! please disregard this post, I got one thing in common confused with odd man out. [ May 02, 2003: Message edited by: Sophia the Thunder Mistress ]

They all came to aid a friend or people who were friendly towards them
Beren Attacked the dwarfs because they killed Thingol and to (I think) prevent them from doing more damage in Doriath; Turin Killed Glaurung and so prevent him from destroying Brethil; Aragorn came to the aid of Minas Tirith; Eomer came to the aid of Minas Tirith; Turgon Came in what looked as a decisive moment to the aid of Finrod and co;
