I love these little touches - it would have been easier for the production team to just forget about what was happeneing below - but to include the the army just in the corner of the screen seems to add realism to the shot.

the Ring dangles from the chain around his neck. Gollum gets an eyeful, and his desire is clear to be seen.
I love this look. It's almost like you waving a bone at a starving dog - the intense look of desire / hunger etc.

Back in Denethor’s court, Pippin swears fealty to the Steward, and that makes some sense here, as Pippin makes it seem that he had to learn and practice the oath that in the books just seems to come to mind or was read from a cue card.
the way john noble plays him here is fascinating. look at the almost gleeful, patronising look on his face as Pippin starts to swear his oath. Almost as you would look at a dog with glee when it's done a new trick.

Great scenes between faramir and denethor. much like the book. But the little things PJ adds are good too - for example Faramir's almost impercepitble pause as he walks away from Denethor whilst still being the target of his cruel words . as if he was shocked by what he was being told - perhaps he thought to turn round and confront his father but his nobility stopped him from doing that. Now he's off to a certain death.......
