Trolls and Laurelin’s last fruit.

This is a theory I had some days ago.
Mountain trolls at least are turned to stone (as in "Roast mutton" in The Hobbit) by the light of the sun. The sun, according to Tolkien, is Laurelin’s last fruit and so holds the light of the trees. IF (And this is a big 900 foot tall "IF") a Silmarill has survived or Earendill, for some reason, came with his, Could they wipe out an army of trolls with just a Silmarill? Silmarils do contain the light of the two trees and so to does the sun, if a Silmarill was used, could the eldar or their allies wipe out trolls this way?
This is of course theoretical, there is probably no way for them to get there hands on a Silmarill, and if they did they probably wouldn’t risk it in trying to turn trolls to stone. But hypothetically speaking, could this be possible?
