Although we don't read much about her, I think that Rose Gamgee (nee Cotton) is an important figure.

Rosie's role as wife and mother is so very ordinary. She has no magic, little learning and no power, except the power we all have, the power of honest, selfless love. She could be the wife or mother of any of us.

She's there to welcome Sam back after the last of the magic has departed from Middle Earth, back to a mundane family life of hard work and simple pleasures.
She's also there to ease us, the readers, back to reality now that the fantasy is over.
