The lockholes is where criminals in the Shire were locked up - the 'federal' prison, so to speak. They were in Michel Delving, as your question clearly indicated <img src=wink.gif ALT=""> .

I had to look Michel Delving up. And I found some interesting things. Michel is actually 'old English' for great. Tolkien used it when translating from the original Hobbitish. Delving is of course a modern word for 'digging' or 'excavation'. So Michel Delving = great excavation (or any more appropriate synonym.)

What is more interesting is the word ' Galpsi', which is the reduced form of the word Galbasi. That, of course, is Hobbitish for 'stalker'.

Wait ...uh....I meant to say that that is the Hobbitish word for 'Gamgee'. So our pal Galpsi is related to Sam!!

I knew this at one time but had forgotten it.
