Welcome, Carlithiel. Having first read Tolkien around 1972 was not such a great blessing. He dies two years later leaving only The Hobbit, LoTR, Tom Bombadil and The Road Goes Ever On published. These books, and one of his biographies name other "works" in Middle Earth history such as The Fall of Gondolin, etc. I recall going to a bookstore and asking about then only to find they had never been published. So that was all we had until 1977 when The Silmarillion was published and 1980 when Unfinished Tales came out. The Sil. and UT gave new hope, but Lost Tales was, initially, a great disappointment and I didn't resume buying HoME until about 5 years ago. People today have a lot more to look forward to than we "old timers" did.
