This is a great addition! Man, I really need to get the LotR Companion. I also wanted to comment about one part:

It is clear that Gandalf (with greater insight and compassion) had in fact more knowledge of birds and beasts than Radagast, and was regarded by them with more respect and affection.

Ouch. Poor Radagast is not even respected as much as Gandalf despite devoting all of his time to caring for the birds and beasts.
