Ondolinde, Brandywine, Gildor Inglorion, Glorfindel, Alqualonde, Lalaith, and Laiquendi. I love just saying those things out loud. Maybe that's why people look at me so strangely...

I just love names that sort of "roll" off the tongue, and sound so ellegant. As someone already said, Osgiliath is really funny to say. Some of my others are...
Imrahil Celeborn Cirith Ungol Minas Tirith Iarwain-ben-adar Ghan-Buri-Ghan, in fact all pukel-men talk lol, with the "woses," "pukel-men," and "gorgun" is just fun to say lol. Ecthelion Remmirath Radbug (great name for an orc) And most of the dwarf names are fun, oin, gloin, balin, fili, kili...etc My all time favorite word would have to be.... Mount Taniquetil, just rolls off so beautifully. |

My favourite name is the one I have, Thorongil. It just sounds kind of mighty. Like a great eagle soaring under the stars. I like it.

As I think the first poster said, Gildor Inglorion is truly a wonderful name. Other names/words I like are Bauglir, Laurelindorinan, Eressea, and let's not forget alallalallarumbalindorkamandaburume! (Entish for "hill") I think I've got it right, anyway; I'm going on memory here!
But if I was Bernard Hill I would make everyone call me Mr. Alallalalla etc. just to irritate them! Bah-hah! |

I like the sound of Rohan, Mirkwood (sounds creepy) Minas Morgul, Stoors, Isildur, nazgul, fangorn and the westmarch. Mostly because they are all very original names and not at all typical of ordinary fantasy tales. I myself have thought of many middle-earth type names but none compare to those mentioned. I think the place names in the shire could be more original, such as "old forest"!

Oddly enough I only like two names in the whole of ME better than all the others; Beren and Linaewen. Beren because it reminds me of him and luthien and their story and how bitter sweet it was, and Linaewen because it is the name of a river in the sil, and it just flows right off your tongue.

I agree I love it how some just roll off the tongue. My favourite's would have to be Lalaith, Tinuviel, Silmarien(not suprising, hey), Éowyn and Gildor Inglorion is just... beautiful. Olorin sounds really strong, too.

Kilimac!!!! That is the greatest name ever!!
I just like words that flow, like Utúlie'n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatári, utúlie'n aurë! That has got the best line ever (in the book, that is. In the movie, the best line is, 'You're supposed to be deadd!'). I also like imitating Andy Serkis, Billy Boyd, and Christopher Lee.

The first name that really made an impression on me, while reading the LOTR, was Galadriel. I remember even thinking about changing my name to that...
Other name that I love is Imrahil.

It's settled I have found my faverite thread. I love names in general (I have seven babyname books in my room) and have always LOVED the names in ME. I don't think I could ever pick faverites(there are so many wonderful ones) but I love reading your thoughts on certain names. I'll leave you with one I've been thinking about recently. Doesn't the sound of the word Mithril give the feeling of something long and elegent and beautiful?

I really agree that some of the names just "flow".
Personally, I like the names Balin (surprise) Haradrim (It sounds so ... *grrrrr* grim) Ancalagon Sauron Ithildin Moria Beregond and none of you have mentioned "Targon", an innkepper in Gondor who is greeted by Beregond while he is showing Pippin the city. I really love the sound of that name.

Actually I do not remeber those names I like but one I do remember : (talk in a Gandalf-kind-a way trough quite bushy mustache) Fool of a Took . And also I liked how Gandalf said : "Meriadoc Bradybuck and Pergrin Took. I should have guessed " when they launched the rocket .

For me, Tolkien works are full of names which sound very realistic and lively - I mean, you feel that someone could really have such name. The same for places, of course.
My personal favourities are: Melian, Manwe, Cirdan, Minas Ithil, Minas Tirith, Barad-dur.

My favorite Tolkien names are:
Cúthalion Fingon (short and sweet without any of that fishy pronunciation business) Maedhros Caranthir (I am a resident obsessee.) Maelor (the early version of "Maglor") Feanor Nerdanel Aranrúth (my real name! Yee!) Labadal (it reminds me of what I used to call my father) Thranduil Curufin (has a nice ring to it) Aldarion Annael And straight from the Department of Redundancy Department: Dagor Dagorath
