I often wondered about that when I first joined the downs, then I forgot it.
I believe it is just a force of collective personal originalism which leads us away from the expected. Otherwise, I can't see anything like 'gandalf uncloaking' or the classic, 'disco boromir' ever happening. Which, would be very sad.
