Thanks so much to everyone who has responded to this question. There are many good ideas here, too many for me to comment on all of them, but let me point to just a few.

I would add just one more point. The background of the filmaker also plays a critical role. I used to get very frustrated every time I saw Frodo the "victim" come on screen. Now I keep reminding myself that this director has prior background in horror films. So we are actually looking at characters like Frodo and Theoden through the eyes of someone who sees them through that particular prism. sharon
