The kindness of long worms
Diamond18, for shame. How can you equate dragons with balrogs? Would Durin's Bane have started a chain of charity toy shops? Would it have offered hypnotherapy to amnesiac Eldar? As we can see from HoME XXXVIII (Myths Rewritten) Glaurung did both of these things. And what of Smaug the Golden? Murdered unjustly by a footpad while simply trying to reclaim his property from thieves. Only Dwarves could take an innocent hostile takeover as an excuse for brigandage; and only a morally reprehensible people like the Men of Dale would so opportunistically exploit that situation to stage a mugging. Smaug was one of the main donors to the South Mordor Distressed Gentleorcs Fund, which collapsed at the end of the Third Age without his contributions to support it. Dragons get too bad a press, and it was high time somebody started to stand up to the naysayers.
