I think it could be a number of reasons. The fact that it's long could turn people off. Also, lots of people don't enjoy the fantasy genre. Some people may like the read about ordinary people going through ordinary things so they can relate or something. I dunno, I LOVE LotR so I can't really understand it how some people don't like it!
