Apparently cold people like Tolkien.

My husband thinks it's cause they don't go outside as often.

Anywho...I'm from Augusta, Georgia

Pshhhh tell your husband that this "hot" hearted Latino likes Tolkien anyway. And from before I moved to Canuckia... erm I mean, Canada.

In any case, I'm not sure about the statistic.... I mean, it's true that there are ten times as many Americans as there are Canadians, but doesn't that mean that if you just walk down some big city in Texas (where there seems to be a rather large number of Downers, take that Jenny Husband's theory) saying "I live in the barrow downs... almost literally" it'd be more likely for you to run into a downer anyway?

narfforc has been trapped in the Barrow!
From the place where all the trees moved

I'm from Fleetwood LANCASHIRE England, it was once a big fishing port on the west coast, until the EU and the Conservatives conspired to kill it. There aren't any trees to speak of, so they don't move very fast, I often wondered why they called it Fleetwood, maybe it's because of the speed they were chopped down.

Maybe it refers to the speed wood can obtain when made into a boat?
  1. The place of this name in Lancashire got its name in the 19th century from its founder, Sir Peter Hesketh Fleetwood, and is not the source of the surname. English: probably a habitational name from a lost or unidentified place named with Old English flēot ‘stream’, ‘estuary’ + wudu ‘wood’.

Speaking of trees and places

Here in Florida, the landscapers are messing up the trees. Treebeard would take about 500 years just to switch it back to normal. In the central, non coastal parts of lorida, palm trees are put up, next to native oak and pine. In West Palm Beach, I saw a bunch of oak trees being planted 40 yards from the Atlantic! Its tourism at work....Fanghorn would have a word.

Maybe because the wood went to the fishing fleet?

Strangely enough, there probably were a lot of woods at one time all the way up and down the Lancashire coast - this will have been a long time ago. They ran up to the edges of the meres, and when they fell, they went into the waters which would shift in size and shape many times over the centuries. That's where all the Bog Oaks come from that break the ploughs. Fleetwood is at the Northern end of one of the old meres that have long since been drained away.

The story about the Hesketh family might be right though, as they also had much to do with building Southport, being the big landowning family, and there's also Hesketh Bank - about 15 miles as the bird flies from Fleetwood but about 50 by car! There's also Fleet Street, the locals' name for the road from Ormskirk to Southport.

Sorry, bit of a pet subject there...much to davem's horror, him being a sinister tyke.

Interesting that you mention all this, Lal. I was born in Southport, and lived in Hesketh Bank for my early years.

Apparently, if you are born in Southport you are known as a 'sand-grounder', this has always confused me, seeing as the majority of the ground is concrete and the beech is always flooded. Or at least, it is whenever I go there.

Anyway, I hope that was on topic just about, seeing as it’s kind of about where I'm from...
