I hate to be too querulous (actually, no I don't, I just pretend to), but wouldn't it make more sense if a loss resulted in the loss only of the original, unadjusted point value? That's the way it works in horse racing. Under the stated system, betting for a long shot is extraordinarily unwise, even if you believe the odds to be significantly better than given. E.g. the average net gain on a 6:1 shot at 10 points would be -50 points!
