I think I have it (thanks to all the hints, of course) !

Kettle of Fish

As in "A different kettle of fish", an alternative.

Something suspicious is fishy and so would the tea made in a fish kettle be.

So bloody obvious when you see it...

I think you two just made up that user. I've never heard of such a name.

GAH! Exactly Eomer...so bloody obvious...

And the reason neither of us have heard of Kettle of Fish is that he hasn't been here since before the Barrow-Downs used a vBulletin Board.

Only old fogeys like Squatter have ever heard of him...

EDIT: Oh wait, you're an old fogey too...

No we didn't.

The thread's gone now, but Underhill once told Belin that every member apart from the two of them was invented by him. You know who to blame now.

And neither of those two names are particularly active, hmm?

That was a good riddle, I enjoyed it!

Shield

Last activity 1970? A signature which I cannot fathom without a dictionary (Squatter hallmark)? I sense trickery!

Seriously though, that was one of the more enjoyable questions on this thread. Most of the time someone gets the answer within a few hours.

Now, is that "him" Underhill or Kettle It likely explains Kettle's role in Belin's game, now, doesn't it? Explains the game, too.

A bit of Kettle memberabilia:

Clearly a case of the kettle calling the Rider black.

It would appear that it is also highly unlikely that any remember it.

I don't suppose you'd believe I had the old and fishy answer scribbed at my desk at home over the weekend, and promptly forget ere Monday rolled in? Thought not....

Ah well, on to more adventures with the member's list! Serpent...Hmmm.
