Your right it is probably a wig, but still. I don't mind seeing a long beard ie: Gandalf's as long as it's well kept.

I too remember Balin 's old picture. He looked rather like Elijah Wood in it, and I recall that he spent a lot of time explaining to people that he didn't really look like Elijah in real life, just in that picture.
