Unfortunately, the reason the ground was incredibly soft was because it was actually quicksand, so they started sinking.

Unfortunately both the eagles and the hobbits sank in the quick sand, and the eagles vow never to help the hobbits again...

Fortunately, the quick sand was only a doorway to an underground cave, so they didn't drowned in the quick sand.

Unfortunately due to the earlier vow of the eagles the Hobbits are now stuck inside then cave.
