It is a great deal of hard workign writing a story as involved and developed at Tolkien- I should know- I am writing a novel of my own with another author.
In responce to who looked like what- that is the fun part about books- there is never one single, correct interperation. As a writer I am thrilled and eager to see another's intereperation- even if it differs from my intial idea when writing. It is insightful. Concerning Legolas- I have seen people paint him with black hair- is it true that there is no true writing indicating that the elves have ears? I have yet to find one.
