				gollum's appearance

I was recently re-watching the commentary on the Two Towers EE and Dominic Monaghan said something that got me thinking. He said that sometimes gollum looks old, young, like a cat, like a frog, like a dog, and sometimes like a bus. How many of you think he looks like a bus, cuz I do.

I don't see how he looks like a bus...I don't see how somebody can connect the physical appearance of a person to that of an object. I've never done that..."Wow you look like a fork this morning," but I guess people have. Quote:

Lads, I think Dominic was joking when he said that Gollum sometimes looked like a bus. Otherwise one might also truly believe him when he said that "Buckleberry Ferry!" was the best line in the entire movie. |

He looks like a bus because he has big shiny eyes like headlights. Perhaps this is a thread better suited to Mirth? |

Wouldn't say bus about gollum cos the phrase is usually "looks like the back end of a...." and he is a bit scrawny...... but as for other inanimate objects ... hour-glass and pear shaped are in common use....

Bus, toad, cat or lizard. All made possible by Apple's "Shake" and Pixar's "Renderman" I grovel at the feet of the amazing computer wizardry! Gollum is just astonishing and kudos to that pair of compoanies (same CEO).

I think they made Gollum way too cute. In that one scene where he's on all fours, he looks up at Frodo in that same adoring way a dog looks at its master.

Well, he did act like a little puppy sometimes to get what he wanted. I think they made him look like that because Jackson wanted people to feel sorry for him a little bit. It might have worked a little too well.

Hmm, I never really saw a bus in Gollum. I saw a sports car on occasion, sometimes a stretch limo but never really a bus. Quote:

I would avoid taking anthing that Dominic Monaghan says about Gollum seriously. He's an actor, and not a Tolkien scholar. He's just trying to say that Gollum is a character with different personalities.

I agree that Gollum was waaaaaay too cute. He made me angrier as a cute little grovelling lizard (with the same fingernails as Elijah Wood) than in the book, where I imagined him to be a little creepier. And tho Dom might just be an actor... he was right about the cat/frog/dog part. If not the bus. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Joseph Buquet, hold your tongue--and keep your hand at the level of your eyes!

Maybe Dom meant 'buss,' an old-fashioned word for 'kiss,' though I can't see a mouth that eats worms, raw fish (probably raw orc) and ring-fingers being very kissable. Especially before the invention of the toothbrush. He might have meant 'bus' as in bus-boy, the guy who cleans up the mess off the tables in a restaurant after a meal. Gollum certainly qualifies as a mess, as do most bus-boys. I don't think Gollum would leave food spatters all over him, though, even if they were from other peoples meals. I don't think he'd be that picky. Actually, there is a single shot of Gollum in Moria peering over the top of a ladder rung (or something like that) during "Fellowship" where his eyes sort of glow like the headlights of a bus. In the book Tolkien describes Gollum as "a black creature",not as a grey one. And he says Gollum`s hair is rare, but not five hairs altogether!!!! |
