I believe that, in most cases, you would have to try significantly to insult Tolkien.

True, but I know that at least I meant that I insulted Tolkien's "essense." Not that I actually expected him or his aura to rise out of his grave. (As interesting as that would be.)

So I just stopped writing anything related to Middle Earth, even though I sometimes yearn to do it - I know I'm not capable so I let the moment pass.

Don't let it pass. Do it. The more you do, the better it'll get. Write your main points, write your story, then get a Beta to check it over for you.
