Essex has just left Hobbiton.
As previously discussed on other threads, and as others have mentioned on this thread, I can see the LOTR becoming a mini-series rather than another set of films.

The audio transcripts of lotr run at approx 54 hours (ps I've heard they're re releasing this soon at a cheaper price).

Roughly cutting the film into 3 seasons leaves 18 hours a book. This would work perfectly for american tv (where money wise it would no doubt be made if anywhere...) for 24 episodes at 45 minutes each. Perfect!

I'm writing (well, no cutting and pasting and adding in a few bits to replace the narration of the book) a screenplay. It's very easy at the mo with the first few chapters. All 'stage directions' are explained by Tolkien. The only bit was adding in the scenes for Saruman's meeting with the Black Riders, which I've taken from (version c) of the Unfinished Tales part, Hunt for the Ring.

This brings me on to an area where I would add to the story. I would show, where possible, what happened to the other characters (especially in fotr which is Frodo centric) that directly effects Frodo's journey. (ie the Black Riders above, Gandalf's escape via Rohan, just missing the hobbits and fighting with the black riders at weathertop, etc)

So, to finish, I don't see why we would have a remake, where the logical conclusion to me is to make a few series for TV. (Or bring back the old Cinema Matinee on a weekly basis. Wouldn't that be great?)
