I got a lot of too-strong prescriptions in elementary school, and now I can't see clearly further than six inches from my nose.

That probably happened to me; that's only about how far I can see with my glasses off. But, if you go just a little while each day with your glasses off, you're eyes start slowly improving. My new prescription (better than my last!) is proof of it.

I don't really know how they'd deal with eye problems. I imagine Gondor would probably have the best methods, seeing how the Numenoreans were kind of obsessed with health care.
