So maybe no one has really been following the rules for a while - no one is posting their maximum. So, in that case I would give it to you except that looking back Sauron is in the list too. Wait, now I'm confused... and getting Balrogs mixed up... So not fewer people, but different people, and the most is 4. Sorry for all the confusion!

Because it could be done in three.

It is optional to set a maximum number of links. But, if the question-setter sets a maximum then it must be done in that number. Otherwise it can be done in up to 6 degrees (hence the name of the game).

But you used Sauron anyway, Perky.

How about:

Ghân-buri-Ghân -> Merry -> Glorfindel -> Ecthelion -> Gothmog.
