I think the hobbits' cloaks can be worn under the pack without holes. They just can't be wrapped around the body when in that configuration because of the straps.<P>When you mentioned physics, I thought you were referring to Gandalf being able to fall faster than his sword and "catch up with it" during the first scene in TTT.
