Don't get "complete Tolkien companion" get Unfinished Tales.<P>Oropher's and Amdir Mal-gald's armmies suffered quite heavily, because Oropher refused to hold back, as he was told by Gil-Galad, refusing to aknoledege his rule maybe, and charged for the black gate, hoping to defeat Sauron. Amdir Mal-galad's armuy had been decapitated in the Dead Marshes.
