The Shannara series by Terry Brooks have to be the best fantasy books besides Tolkien's ever. Madeline L'engle is good too.
1. The Sword of Shannara 2. The Elfstones of Shannara 3. The Wishsong of Shannara The First King of Shannara(prologue, equivalent to The Hobbit).
