Going back to this for a moment...I'm pretty sure Halbrand/Sauron got captured to bait Adar into attacking Eregion. By telling Adar that Sauron is helping the Elves, it's going to start the war that's been teased in the Season 2 trailer.

Poor Waldreg. I sort of liked him, but it was cool to tap into one of Sauron's powers/abilities from the 1st age.
