Who wrote...
Who was the writer of...
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. Was it Tolkien (that is, Tolkien, the author, breaking down the third wall), or does this poem exist in Middle-earth (I believe I recall Gandalf reciting bit of it to Frodo)... Is it of Elvish origin? Or a modern day (i.e., "Third Age" parable of ancient times...) creation? I'm curious as to the origin of this poem which so succinctly sets up the premise of the Trilogy... and moreso, I'm interested in knowing if it was contrived by someone "in the know" and under the thumb of Sauron, or rather, if it was is a fanciful indulgence of a later age playing upon the "myths" of ages past...
