What if...

Sauron had made a fake ring along with the real one?

"Good job, Frodo, you cast the ring into Mt. Doom!"

"Umm, Sam, I think we had the wrong one."

Meanwhile, Sauron laughs as a Wraith returns the real ring. Uh oh.

What if....

Sam had drowned near Amon Hen?

Well, Frodo would have died in Mordor.
