Annuminas

Hi everyone! I just have a quick question. What exactly was Annuminas? It was hardly ever mentioned in LOTR, and as of right now I have not read the Histories of Middle Earth nor have I finished the Silmarillion. Was it destroyed? Did we know what it looked like?
