So Morgoth is still there in Bilbo's time and Smaug is forced to work for Morgoth instead of treasure hunting. Most of the Hobbits are killed in the seconded battle of sudden flame (shire reckoning 1418). But on the plus side, Sauron does not make the One ring until much, much later on, when Melkor gets bored and goes to Manwe saying, "I'm sorry."

I wish Tom Bombadill spent more time in the Shire after the War of the Ring.
