Hollin/Eregion

When I read the Lord of the Rings, I was intrigued by the mention of the land of Hollin, near Moria. Legolas said:

...But the elves of this land were strange to us silvan folk, and the trees and grass do not remember them. Only I hear the stones lament them: deep they delved us, high they builded us; but they are gone. They are gone. They sought the Havens long ago.

(Legolas, FotR, The Ring Goes South) They were friends of the dwarves, and helped build the secret door.

When I looked Hollin up in the index, it gave reference to Eregion. In Chapter Two, and Shadow of the Past, Gandalf said to Bilbo,

In Eregion long ago, many elven rings were made, magic rings as you call them, and they were, of course, of various kinds: some more potent and some less.

(Gandalf, FotR, The Shadow of the Past) I assume he was talking about the three elven rings, Narya, Nenya, and Vilya. But, what happened to Hollin? (or Eregion) Does anyone know? Why did all the elves leave? What happened? (I am sorry if this is a stupid question, but Hollin, as I said, has intrigued me for quite some time.) If anyone knows anything on this subject, or anything about Hollin/Eregion, please reply! [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]
