I must confess that I am still mystified by the 'ultra-purist' stance. To Tolkien himself, the tales of M-E were a constant work-in-progress. He wrote different versions of the tales, some more detailed, some more compressed, some with this detail in, another version with that detail left out or altered. Do you mean you don't recognize it as in you refuse to acknowledge its existence or validity? It's just a movie.
