I think the problems with 'who was TB' arise as a result of knowing more about the ME. If you don't know all the history and races and such, you aren't going to have any problem with who Tom was, he'd just be Tom. It's only when you learn more and realise that he's not like anything else, but could possibly fit into all kinds of categories that the confusion arises.
