Sting Tumults of Fire & Inrushing Sea

In reading the chapter of UT on Aldarion & Erendis one of the footnotes describes the first return of the Numenorians to Middle Earth. The Men of Eriador were amazed at their return because:
Quote:
they had believed that the men who dwelt in the lands beyond had been destroyed or drowned in great tumults of fire and inrushing seas.
Can anyone shed some light on what is refered to here? Does Beleriand start sinking before Numenor drowns?

So many questions......
