Arandor, the Land of the King, was part of the Mittalmar, the innermost region of Númenor. Within Arandor was Armenelos, the capital city of Westernesse. It also bordered the eastern side of Meneltarma, and had a port, Rómenna, on the Bay of Rómenna.

Research, Ha! Now this will take some research. Good ole JRR seemed to hold Bilbo at a pretty darn high standard for running. Especially for a fifty year old, fat, three foot guy. According to information available in the Hobbit and in the Atlas of Middle Earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad, you should be able to figure out Bilbo's average running speed. Now, I know math isn't my hottest subject, but I'm pretty sure I've got my calculations right. Lets see how you all do.

Since I'm leaving soon, and I'd like to see this one answered, I'll give you a hint. When Bilbo began this run, in which he ran at ____ mph, it was from Bag End to Bywater, which I have estimated to be 5 miles. By the way, his speed is impossibly fast, so don't be surprised at the answer you get.

If the distance truly was 5 miles then Bilbo's running speed would be 30mph! (I recall that it took him 10 minutes to get from target A. Bag-End to target B. The Green Dragon) EDIT: Darn you Saucepan, you beat me!! How many of the participants in the Battle of Five Armies actively feature (as opposed to just being mentioned) in LotR, and who are they?

I think Estanesse takes the prize, since I was thinking of characters who were specifically identified in The Hobbit, and of the Eagles only Gwaihir was identified (by his title, anyway). Arguably, Thranduil could be included, since he plays an active part in the War of the Ring, but since he plays no active part in the story that was told in LotR, I am happy to exclude him from the answer. So, Estanesse, it's your turn ...
