| Jeopardy Question

Okay, i was just watching Jeopardy and one of the Daily Doubles read like this: "The would be ruler of Middle Earth" Now for those of you don't know, in Jeopardy, you are given an answer and you must give the question. Immediatly I said, "the Dark Lord" thinking of Morgoth who nearly had all of Beleriand (the most populous part of Middle Earth) in his grasp. Alas, the contestant answered, "Sauron", but got it wrong. Now here's the part that irked me. Alex Trebek said that the answer was The Lord of the Rings. (the category was "O Lord" which meant that the word "lord" had to be in your answer) Now who do you think was the "would be ruler of middle earth"?

Sounds like the Dark Lord Sauron would have worked too.

I'm not quite sure who would be the "would be lord". I think the answer should have been Sauron beacause not only is "The Lord of the Rings" the series' title, it also refers to the current holder of the ring. If THIS was the case, then Frodo would have been the character of choice. What do you think?

That's an awfully vague question if you ask me. There are many in the book who wish to rule Middle-earth, if only for a moment.

Like I said earlier, the holder of the Ring would be the one. Of course, all who knew of the Ring would want it, but it still remains that only the one who possessed the Ring would have a chance of becoming the ruler. I still hold with Lindolirian though that Sauron orMorgoth would have both been exceptable answers. The title as the answer produces an extremely vague answer to the Jeopardy question because 6 inhabitants of Middle-earth have possessed it: Sauron The king who cut it from his hand Deagol Smeagol (Gollum) Bilbo And finally Frodo |

What was wrong with the answer? It worked under that category. Whenever people talk about the Lord of the Rings they mean Sauron, and he did rule ME all through the S.A.

Frodo was not a Lord of the Ring, he was just the bearer.

Indeed.. remember how Pippin greeted Frodo as the Lord of the Ring and Gandalf stopped him, saying there was only one, Sauron? Of course, this would mean that the correct answer would be "Lord of the Ring" not "Lord of the Rings", wouldn't it? I mean, Sauron doesn't control the Three or the Seven (although of course the Nine he does...) --Belin Ibaimendi

He is 'Lord of the Ring' for he is It's maker. Also he is 'Lord of the Rings' for if he has the One Ring, he controls all other Rings of Power (also the Three, also the Seven) and the people who were them. He could see their minds and all that, and eventually he would become the ruler of all. So he was both 'Lord of the Ring' and 'Lord of the Rings'. greetings, lathspell

Uh, he probably did what he did to the 9. Which is......um, something??? Well, what could he do with them? My guess is that he put them safely away. Under his bed beside his slippers.. Oh by the way, I see Luthien, that you've been here since May, but I haven't seen you around. So I just wanted to say welcome to the Downs and hey!!! And I love your name by the way! I woulda thought that somebody would have taken that already!! Well, obviously they didn't. That's one of my favorite tales too, how romantic...sweet...*sigh*. I'm going off topic here, but..ok I said all that I needed to!!
