I reacently bought The Silmarilon, I have not read the book yet for I am short on time. It had a map in it, as most JRRT books do, I was wondering if this map is of the same general area as the maps in LOTR area. None of the names were the same, but the coastline looked somewhat similar. This is a burdening question...... j/k, but I am really wondering.
Thanks -Ishbad |

The lands that are primarily discussed in the Silmarillion are maps of pre-LotR Arda. This is what the lands of Middle-Earth looked like and were called way back when, during the period before the second and third age. You will find the land of Numenor within, which does not appear on third age M-E because (very Atlantis-like) it sunk beneath the sea. Many of the places on that map in the Silm correspond to Third Age M-E maps.
Hope that answers your question.

I'm guessing that you are looking at a map of Beleriand? Well, on the far right you should see the Ered Luin (Blue Mountains). That is in the far northwestern corner of your LotR map. I don't want to give too much away, but the coastline isn't completely similar because the much of the region (Beleriand) where many of the events in the Sil take place is not there in the third age.
I think Kransha and I have different copies...mine only has one map, a map of Beleriand. I have a DelRey copy. If you only have one map it is probably a map of Beleriand, which would have parts corresponding to your LotR map. If you have more (?) then I wouldn't know. I hope this makes sense. ![]() |

Yes, our copies may be different so don't rely on me. Of course, if yours was recently bought it's probably the copy I have, considering mine is newer (had to get a new copy because the old one fell apart. ARRGGGHHH!). Ok, between the 2 of us, that should answer the question for the most part.

Its a bit north
The area of Beleriand is north of the land known in the third age. For some reason or another (I don't want to give anything away if you havn't read the book) and it goes away and becomes a wastye land of sorts.
