Was there only one way to get the ring into the fires of Orodruin? (Mount Doom?). Obviously, The way that the council of the Wise chose, was the best way...it worked! But have you ever been reading LotR and thought, "What about doing it this way?". I have. I would have given the ring to Gwaihir the Windlord and sent him and all of his armies far off in the south by way of the coast all the way to South Gondor, and then head east to Harad (south of the bordering Mtns of Mordor, so that they would (apparently) be out of the picture. Then I would have created a diversion by sending all the mustered forces of the Elves and dwarves and men on a frontal attack on Mordor thus drawing Sauron's attention away, while Gwaihir, with the ring in his talons, surrounded by the countless eagles of his army would make a swift dash for the gaping mouth of Orodruin, and he could drop it in (Kind of like a reverse in football). Even if Sauron figured it out at the last minute and sent the Naz'gul on their winged steeds away from the battle to try and stop Gwaihir, they would have a pretty lousy chance of getting at him through thousands of eagles, right? But this poses the question, would the ring have had any power over Gwaihir (perish the thought)?
|

No to mention: Would Gwaihir have accepted the task in first place? Was not the journey to the cracks of doom also a test for the Children of Eru, to prove their good will and righteousness to the Valar? The only help they got from the Ainur was when they proved their own courage and will (Gandalf was mainly an encourager; the Eagles only rescued the successful Sam&Frodo, and Gandalf after his heroic sacrifice; Frodo was only granted relief in the land of Bliss after his success)? A test, and a lecture, for the Shire folk, to stand up when need arises?
|

Maybe if they did it a few at a time, some going east and then south, others going west and south. Well, I don't think anyone at the council of Elrond would have accepted the idea either. I'm sure glad they did it they way we read it in LotR! actually, Gandalf and Elrond were very right. Sauron would have never, even in his widest dreams, imagined that a couple of Hobbits from the Shire would walk right into his kingdom and bring him down.
Edited by: draggonk law at: 2/18/01 2:06:27 pm |

I wouldnt have done it the way dragonklaww suggested it and I'm content with the way tolkien did it.Just think if he had we wouldnt have met Sam or Frodo or Merry or Pippin or gotten to know them as well I mean look at Sam and Shelob you would never expect Sam to fight a humongos spider at the beginning of the books but when the time came he just went brave all of a sudden and boom it hit Shelob like a thunder bolt. And anyway I wouldnt have been able to destroy the ring.Frodo had to have his finger bitten off to get rid of the accursed thing.
|

Interesting that both Frodo and Sauron lost a finger because of the ring. And again, I too am glad that Elrond's plan was carried out. I just wanted to see if anyone else could think of another possible way. (For example, Glorfindel suggested the possibility of sending the ring back over the sea or throwing it into the sea, but Gandalf counseled against it. And Boromir suggested someone putting it on).
|

I really dont belive there was any other way the Ring could have been dealt with properly. Elrond knew that this was the time (it felt right or somthing) . If i was Frodo i would have done the same in his postion, But if i lived there myself and i knew what the wise say elrond or Gnadalf knew i would have been off into the very far east beyond the iron hills and off.
That may sound selfish but hey why wait to see what happens. |

Like others, I don't think there was another way. Those who were interested in the Ring were automatically at risk from its influence and those who weren't didn't care enough to protect it and carry it properly.

Who knows what a Ring like that might do to your testicles. and if you wore it too long. Your **** might become invisible forever!

Well, I'd get the Marines, Rangers, and SEALS equiped with their best stuff, and a *** -load of tanks and bombers. Then I'd go in and storm Mordor since no orc armer is gonna stand up to armer-piercing rounds from an M-16. Then, send in the 81st from the air, and they can parachute down onto the mountain, and they can carry the ring in a lead case, and throw the whole damn thing in. All the while, tanks are laying down a supressive fire at the gates, and anti-aircraft guns are taking out the Nazgul. Now all i need is a flux capacitor and a really big delorian that can hold all that stuff.

Yes, but that would have to be a big Delorian, but seriously, mustering the dwarves would have been a huge asset, not to mention the elves. Just convince the dwarves thier precious caves will be annihilated if they dont help........they will come. Also, could they have taken it to valinor? It was really too bad the man of Westernesse were no longer numerous, the purest blood being the Dunedain and the people of Dol Amroth

not me man ...even Frodo couldn't do it at the Crack of Doom! the One Ring's destruction was...accidental.
like G said (he simply *hates* to be called "G") perhaps Gollum had a part to play in the saga. Gollum played a lot of parts in the whole saga, from Hobbit to Return of the Jedi, opps i mean: King! sorry...to me Gollum is a tragic hero if you will...corrupted by the Ring, forever in self-conflict with good and evil, the spine of the stories...and finally forever re-joined with his Precioussss in the fires of Mt Doom. Well... the only way the Ring could actually be destroyed is by the fire of Mt. Doom, and we all know a frontal attack on MorDoc at that time would have been suicidal -- and we all know the Elves would not have joined. And Isengard would need to be considered.

I'd have hijacked a Nazgul.
