Character Ages
How old was Legolas when he passed into the undying lands? I've just been wondering since it dosent tell in any of the appendixes.

It doesn't say in any of the glossaries or the encyclopedias. All I found was that he flourished in the Third Age.

There is no exact age, although the people over at Newline would argue that.

Ah, but New Line can't argue on that one, they didn't right the book, they just backed the film.

not exactly the same topic, but I was wondering...it says how old Frodo and Pippin were when they set out form Bag End, but I can't find anything in the books that says how old Merry and Sam were, older than Pippin and younger than Frodo (from the comments made by Frodo concerning baths in Crickhollow) but no exact age. where did the ages spring from in the characters section of the Barrowdowns?

Pippin: Appendix C of LotR (the family trees) gives all the birth-years of the most important hobbits (and a lots of less important hobbits as well).

Be careful about Sam's age in the Family Trees! I asked about this about a month ago in Novices and Newcomers.
According to LOTR Appendix B, the chronology or Tale of Years, Sam was born same year as Faramir - Third Age 2983, but according to Appendix C, the family trees, he was born Shire Reckoning 1380, which equals Third Age 2980. Elrian advised me that the generally accepted date is that from the Tale of Years.

hallo again its the new guy who started the topic. I found it funny that no books by Tolkien himself tell Legolas' age, yet New Line Cenima can come up with the number of 2,931 in the official move guide.(maybe I should bring this up in the movie forum?)

That's interesting. Thrandruil his father is only breifly mentioned in the Silmarillion, and mentioned some in Unfinished tales as becoming King after the Last Alliance where his father Oropher was killed. Legolas was not mentioned before the Third Age. But they never said that he didn't exist then either.

If you wnat to know the exact ages of the Fellowship ( execpt for Gandalf and Legolas) go to quizzes and under medium there is one that I wrote titled "How Old?" Take the quiz and even if u don't get 'em all right you'll get the answers at the end. The ages are what it was when the Company left Rivendell : December 25, T.A. 3018

I almost forgot... I got the ages by looking at the timeline in Appendix B. I calculated the ages from their birthdates. And yes I used a calculator and had my work checked by others so i wouldn't post bad info.

I noted that in the chapter that Pippin is in Gondor with Beregrond, he states to his son that he is 28 yrs old.
