To explain: I mean song, not orchestral piece, or else I would have posted this in the soundtrack topic. But most songs are not even included in the soundtrack tape.

So let's discuss our favourite songs, the lyrics, the tune, how they fit the situation, how they describe a certain feeling, event, how well the singer performs.

My favourite one is from the Extended TTT, Eowyn's burial song for Theodred. It gives me shivers down my spine when I hear it, it's so beautiful. I've been trying to get the lyrics to it, but couldn't find them. Still I understand this bit: "En Meduselde,...monnum sended' which reminds me of course of "Eala Earendel engla beorhtast ofer middangeard monnum sended" (the lines from Cryst of Cynewulf, which inspired Tolkien). Anyway this song illustrates very well the culture of the Rohirrim. It's somewhat "rich and rolling in part, and hard and stern as the mountains"

And Miranda's voice is perfect for it.

I really liked the song sung in the background in the Houses of Healing scene. It fit really well, especially since the directors decided not to have any dialogue in that scene. It really conveyed Eowyn's feelings without her having to say anything. What I'm trying to say is that it made up for the lack of dialogue and if they were going to shorten that scene I'm glad they did it this way.

And Abercrombie - I don't know if you knew this, but the song in the HoH was recorded by Liv Tyler. "Arwen's Song", though I don't know what she really had to do with that stuff.

I had two favorite songs. The first one was the song at the very end of ROTK when Aragorn is "chanting". And my other favorite song doesn't have words but its the music that is playing while they are talking about the hobbits at the beginning of FOTR

My favourite song is probably the one Gandalf is singing in the beginning of FOTR, "The road goes ever on". I think Bilbo is singing it too when he is leaving the shire.

Here is a part of it:

my favorite song in the movies is the one sung by Eowyn at Theodred's funeral in the EE TT. It is a beautiful song and is also in an Old English meter, which i am currently studying.

The first time that I saw FotR at the cinema I had tears in my eyes as we saw the Elves travelling through the Shire. The song was hauntingly beautiful and so right. It summed up everything that I had ever felt when reading about the Elves. Wonderful!

It's hard to choose a favourite song but having seen RotK most recently I would have to say 'Into The West'. However, when I watch TT I then decide on 'Gollum's Song' and then 'May It Be', seeing a pattern here?

There are such a variety of good songs in LOTRs, that it is really hard to choose just one. Some of my favorite songs would have to be:

-"The Edge of Night", sung by Pippen in Gondor
-"Lothlorien" and "Gandalf's Lament" sung by a choir, though I don't know which
-"Aniron", sung by Enya as the romantic theme for Arwen and Aragorn.

I think all of these song are quite pretty with a touch of melancholy, and help to set the mood of the scenes that they are in.

Clearly the one Pippin sings in Minas Tirith. I don't understand how they can take a piece from a happy walking song and make it sound it so sad and well - fatal.

The song "evenstar" and "aniron" by enya in The Two Towers makes me shaking inside of me. I loved the sequence with Aragorn and Arwen with "aniron" on background during the flashback of Aragorn during their walk to the Helm's deep. Who's singing "evenstar"? Renee Flemming?

P.S. Sorry for my grammar, i'm a french canadian!

Actually Evenstar is sung by Isabel Bayrakdarian. Renee Flemming sings all the songs for ROTK.
Evenstar is one of my favourites though.

There isn't a song that I don't like in the films.

Pippin's song at Minis Tirith is definately one of my favorites. I never would have imagined that song sung in that setting. Perhaps that was a way of reinforcing Pippin's "we have no songs for halls such as these." Still, I thought it fit perfectly.

As for the Aragorn's song @ the coronation, wasn't there something about Viggo coming up with the tune himself?

Yes, that's what I thought when I first read the book (sadly, not having the opportunity, like many of you, to read the book first).

Pippin's song is a nice one, but I think Aragorn's coronation song is my favorite. Even when I saw it in the theaters it sent shivers up my spine, now it means even more since I know what the words mean.

I'm kind of sad that they left out the song of Durin's Folk. That one is the all time best (I even have the lyrics hanging on my bedroom wall

Well I personally like Gollum's song and the one Pippin sings in RoTK, but a song that is not in the movie that I like is the one Legolas sings in RotK
