Tolkien LOTR Synopsis

Someone has written a rather interesting synopsis for "the Lord of the Rings" trilogy. I wonder how many students (not knowing any better...) have written reports for school using this information.

I dunno, but I bet once they got their marks back for their report they'll never rely on Internet synopses again. You can get a more accurate and in-depth synopsis by reading the back of the book.

Methinks someone is trying to teach a few lazy would-be scholars a lesson...

It's a masterpiece of misdirection, though: it's sufficiently similar that a (very) quick skim-read (eg reading the chapter headings and the beginnings and ends of the volumes) wouldn't expose the fraud, but when you get down to brass tacks it's a load of codswallop. The introduction is a classic:

I'm sure the following synopsis and suggestions will help you make the grades you obviously deserve.
And the essay titles are brilliant, even making the historical tie-ins spurious:

Quote:
Remembering that Tolkien wrote this book even as Queen Elizabeth was taking the throne of England when King Edward VIII abdicated and married a commoner
Classic stuff.

I've just noticed that the site that hosts that synopsis carries an article from the Sunday Times, which uses information that can only have come from there.
If a journalist for a respected weekly newspaper can be fooled, then I expect that there are plenty of future fast-food-chain employees trying to use it to produce essays.

Having said that, a double-barrelled surname is always a sure sign of a chinless wonder.

That made me laugh. Everyone should read it.

They also have some other good stuff on their site. Look at this.

Quote:

The simple beauty of the stars contrasts strikingly with the dark shape of Orthanc in Vincent Van Gogh's Gandalf at Isengard. The slashing brushstrokes of the Tower provide a harsh contrast with the serenity of the village below, painted in muted browns which echo Van Gogh's earlier paintings. In a letter to his brother Theo, Van Gogh wrote "I have just finished Council of Elrond and read of G's imprisonment by the evil Saruman. How like it is to my own imprisonment of loneliness here in Arles!"

The Eye

This page is fun too, and it's a little truer to the original story. The guy who created this page has WAY too much free time on his hands though...
