This PhD research survey is being run by Rev. Tom Emanuel, who is a PhD candidate in Fantasy at the University of Glasgow. His phd is funded by the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities (SGSAH) and is supervised by Professor Dimitra Fimi, so it is a substantial, legitimate research project. Tom is a great guy, deeply interested in all things Middle-earth, very interested in talking with other Tolkien fans, and very supportive of both new and long term readers of Tolkien. I have no doubt that if you contact him and are chosen to be in the representative sample you will really enjoy talking with him. He has chosen to allow the respondents to define for themselves "nonreligious".
