With all due respect to MM, I find his "theory" to be entirely unsupported speculation. His theory, in a way, suggests that gold acts as a sort of battery for dragons. The 'evil' in gold supports the dragon's life. The centerpiece of this theory is an assumption that gold contains more of Morgoth's essence than other elements. This assumption is not necessarily correct. He basically creates an idea with no textual support.
