Himaran, how about leaving it in doubt for now, and just playing both possibilities as alive? You never know how such things can help make the story interesting. In fact, I'd go so far as to suggest that even you not make a decision as to which way it is, so that when the truth comes out, it's a "surprise" to everyone, regardless of which way it is.
