In answer to Guinevere's question, nearly all of Tolkien's proverbs are made up by him although they sound very authentic, don't they?
The only 'genuine' English saying quoted here is 'handsome is as handsome does.'

(Tolkien's proverbs are delightful but real English proverbs too, IMO. My favourite is 'Fair words butter no parsnips.')
