Gorlim's *shame* was that he betrayed his friend Barahir and his *gang* to the forces of Morgoth. Captured and tortured he would not give them up, until he was made to believe that his (in fact dead) wife would be restored to him if he told the whereabouts of their hiding place in Dorthonion. After the bargain was made Sauron revealed that what Gorlim had believed to be his wife, was actually a phantom, created by evil magic. Barahir and the rest were found and killed (the Orcs holding onto his hand bearing his ring, later recovered by Beren, his son) and Gorlim was "cruelly put to death" as his *reward* for his treachery........Will that do?
