I too find that always a bit difficult, since the -tar ending is feminine in Finnish...
(In fact, when I was younger and first acquinted with the Silmarillion, I thought Ilúvatar to be female.) But it helps if you keep in mind that the name Ilúvatar comes from two elements
ilúvë "all" and
atar "father"...
